The Carter G. Woodson Institute for Afro-American and African Studies at
the University of Virginia announces residential research fellowships
competition in Afro-American and African Studies for 1997. These
fellowships are for the support of projects in those disciplines of the
humanities and social sciences which concern themselves with Afro-American
and African Studies. For the purpose of this competition, Afro-American
and African Studies is considered to cover Africa, Africans, and peoples
of African descent in North, Central, and South America and the
Carribbean, past and present. Postdoctoral fellowships are for one year
and carry a stipend of $25,000. Predoctoral fellowships are for two years
and carry a stipend of $12,500 per year. Fellowships for tenures
beginning in August of 1998 are available for application againsta
deadline of Monday, December 1, 1997.
Eligibility
The competition for the Woodson Institute fellowship is open to qualified
candidates without restriction as to citizenship or current residence
except for employees of the University of Virginia who may not apply.
Applicants for the predoctoral fellowships must have completed all
requirements for the Ph.D. except the dissertation prior to August 1,
1998.
Applicants for the postdoctoral fellowship must have been awarded their
Ph.D. by the time of application or furnish proof that it will have been
received prior to June 30, 1998.
Conditions
Recipients of postdoctoral and predoctoral fellowships must be in
residence at the University of Virginia for the duration of the award
period, and are expected to contribute to the intellectual life of the
University. To this end, predoctoral fellws will become visiting graduate
students attatched to their respective disciplinary departments and
postdoctoral fellows will receive the status of visiting scholars in their
respective fields.
