The legendary Idris Awate reminds me of CENTO QUATTRO, a penal code
associated with death sentence mainly by hanging. Asmarini were fearful of
that number indeed. It was promulgated on June 16, 1951 by the British
Military Administration at a time when active resistance (shiftnet) flared in
lowland areas. Some say he was a skillful warrior and he would rarely miss
shooting a thread (fetli) once the bullet escaped from its muzzle. He was the
hero of militant students of the golden sixties who followed his foot steps
leading to meda Eritrea. For more information on Awate, please refer to Sagim
No. 14 (1989) and No. 2 (1990).
