I don't think the word baria pertaining to the the nationality is
offensive term. The tgriNa word baria meaning slave in English and
the word baria that refers to the people are different unless
Markakis unknowingly used them to connote the same think. As
Paulo's indicated in his recent post it is a name used by people
themselves. One could make a distinction between two (in tgriNa)
when referring to an individual - baria (slave) vs bariawi (belonging to
the nationality of baria).
Just only to clear some misconception, the baria nationality has a
lighter complexion different from what is normally associated when
some uses the tgriNa word baria meaning slave.
