Almaz came to the US sixteen years ago. When she first arrived here an
American family who sponsored her took her in. At the time she had an acute
shortage of English words and it was often frustrating for her to maintain a
conversation with the American teenagers in the family. One thanks giving day,
when every body was sitting around the dinner table she was asked by one of
the teenagers what people in her country usually eat. Almaz not knowing the
right answer was beef, she said "Ox", everyone looked at her a bit confused
and they all asked her in unison "Ox?" Almaz explained farther " You know,
the husband of cow!"
