This is one of the things that disturbed me while I was in Kenya. Every
day you can see a new, modern and Europianized highrise, going up in the
city of Nirobi. At the same time you see their money loosing its value by
50% within two years. You see all the shiny ("wlad seb zmesla") modern
cars, tourist minibuses, safari trucks, full of foreigners and a happy
Kenyan driver, while you see that most Kenyans, who live in the worst
conditions, in areas infested with thieves (who would cut your hand to
take your watch-- if you don't cooperate) black Kenyans who cram into one
shade about 10 people.
Why is this? I blame it partialy on the people and partialy on the
government. If you ask who owns the newest modern semi-skyscraper you get
an answer like, " oh that belongs to the vice president, that one to the
prime minster.." so on. This is not a rumor, it's open to the public and
it's ok in Kenya for the trade minster to own the bigest imprt export
company. Also I believe the government has sold the country by letting
foreigners invest freely. I think it should have given priority to Kenyans
firs, like the Eritrean govt is trying to do. If you open up Eretrea to
investors as much as they want to, they could make Asmara look like
Chicago overnight (ok over some years) but you could end up with some kind
of colonial Eritrea where the Eritreans become slaves of the investors,
systematicaly. Besides I like Asmara the way it is.
The people of Kenya(certainly not all of them) also share the blame. Kenya
is a very rich county, naturaly. It has a very rich soil and good rain.
Now, keep in mind the struggle of our parents and grand parents (I don't
think I need to go into details of the hardship they faced, doing every
thing they could and as if that is not enough they wait on the rain, if it
rained they hope it doesn't hail, and if things are so far so good, boom,
battle could take place right on the sight, or the man could be killed
going to where ever his land is). In Kenya, the land is there, the rain is
there (check), peace? very abanduntly. Where is the farmer? In Nairobi
employed for shlingi 100 a month or spending his days on the sun in Uhuru
park, supporting 9 wives all over the country side (exaggerated a little).
A survey showed that most preferd to live in the town doing very low
paying job than farming and having a better income outside the city.
Eritreans get jealous when they see the rich lands that cover the most
parts of Kenya. Eritrea and Eritreans could learn a lot from the situation
of Kenya and other African countries.
Who owns Nairobi? Foreigners, minsters, Indian(Asian) Kenyans and
Habesha;-) Havesha is following the tracks of the Indians. When I came to
Nairobi there were a few (but very rich) buisnessmen there. By the time I
left lots of people ( including young people with no work permit) had
started owning matatus (mini buses,-- hey, before Hbesha they were owned
by IndiKenyans). Like the racist guy below said I was first surprised when
I saw sigh, sign, or was it siQ ("whatever"--BD), in a general's uniform,
and the hat, accompanying the president. There are a lot of them close to
power, and Kenya is a bribery troubled country. Therfore what the guy has
said could be true. He is also right when, in his ugly words, he says that
they need to be proud of their culture. I don't know if they are or not
but this is a big advise most of us need, in order not to sell our selves
to others.
Kenyans are the most peaceful people I know; very kind. perhaps they are
to peaceful and too kind. Perhaps that's why they can't figure out how to
live discently while others exploit and make fortunes in their country.
