Selamat Biniam and Dehai:
i first would like to tell you i am among those who appreciate the time
you take to post jokes. Thank you. Even though there isn't much to add to
your post, which eloquently and exhaustively digested the need for humor
and laughter, i thought i would put in my penny's worth anyway.
Dehai's audience is a sample of eritrea at large. It consists of: young
people, older people, foreign-born/raised eritreans, addis ababans (amichi
:), and what have you. It is impossible to have every one agree on
exactly what should and should not be posted. And even if such was
possible, i am not so sure that is what we should do.
Posting jokes of the kind that Biniam mentioned helps keep a lot of
dehaiers who are not interested in politics and other relevant issues
in touch with eritrea and eritreans. In the process, we all get to pick
up on values and culture of our people, which in my opinion, is as
important as existence itself. But one must understand that an all
eritrean exposure to those that have a different upbringing could be
unpalatable! The injection of foreign cultures, whose understanding has
become essential to our survival, is necessary. Jokes have a way of doing
just that. On the other hand, i agree with some of our respected dehaires
who have expressed concern regarding silly and tasteless jokes. Let's
please keep in mind Bini's explanation of the difference between
offensive and non-offensive jokes whenever we get ready to post one.
Respectfully,
Daniel W.
