I have been hopping that some dehaiers would tell us what the recent
governments tax (tarifs) on computers is. But since I did not see any, here is
what I know.

The official "list of taxes" on different goods which was issued about two
years ago states that computers would be taxed for 15% of the original price.
Apparently the governments policy on this issue is not unfriendly. The biggest
problem arises when it comes to implementing it. As you all know the "original
price of a computer" can vary from $200 (second hand) to $3000 (200Mhz..) or
more. The guys who decide what the original price would be, have got no idea
nor official price listing on which their decision could be based. This is not
only true for computers but also for other products like cars, busses...etc.

So, the problem here is lack of information and knowledge of the imported
products on the side of the authority. From my experience the best thing to do
is instead of sending the computers you should better take it with you (if
possible) so that you can argue and convince the guys out there of the real
value of the product you are importing. It is also recommended to have the
official tax listing which is issued by the government with you.

>From my experience the authority would be pleased if they can get any kind of
documents or price lists that would help them make a better decision. This was
at least the case four years ago when they had difficulty in determining the
price of used cars. They finally obtained a price list of used cars issued by
some European countries which helped them determine the value of the cars
better.

So, I suggest, instead of only complaining and comparing Eritrea with other
nations, that we discuss the practical problems in Eritrea and come up with a
brilliant solution if possible. The question is: Is there a way that you think
of that could help the guys at Asmara airport or the ports make a better
estimate of the original price of these computers?

Dawit: If I were you, I would write a letter to Hadas Eritrea and inform them
about this issue.

Mulugheta.
