NEW DELHI, March 6 (Reuter) - Ethiopian Prime Minister Meles
Zenawi said on Thursday that his country supports India's bid
for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council.
Zenawi, beginning a four-day visit, told reporters after a
ceremonial reception at the Presidential Palace in New Delhi
that Ethiopia saw India as a leader of developing countries.
``We support an appropriate role for the people and the
government of India in the United Nations in the capacity of a
permanent member of the Security Council, for the simple reason
that India has been in the forefront of the fight for the Third
World to have a fair say in the affairs of the world,'' he said.
New Delhi has been campaigning for an expanded Security
Council and a permanent role in it, citing its huge population
and the active role played by its soldiers in U.N. peace-keeping
forces in the former Yugoslavia, Rwanda and elsewhere.
``Our expectations are to revamp the long-standing good
relations between India and Ethiopia in the area of human
resource development, trade and investment,'' Zenawi added.
Later on Thursday, Zenawi was scheduled to hold talks with
Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda and to address businessmen.
