Selamat Mobae;
This is a comment from another silent reader motivated
to write when I read your posting on the issue of democracy and literacy
which was really very well thought. It respects people no matter of
their degree of literacy and clears the misconception created as if
democracy was only known by the educated or consumed by the literate.
Secondly I would like to point out that our people have been also
democratic in their own way even when they do not have enough bread. It
is quite misplaced to talk about bread and democracy when it comes to
our people who have paid very dearly in the struggle for the
independence of the country. They were democratic in their own way when
they had no bread. To say that bread should be given to the Eritrean
people before democracy is quiet an error and I do not believe this is
the position of the government as I can understand. If it is meant that
democracy is a superior good that is demanded after satisfying basic
needs then the analysis is misplaced. There is no one that gives
democracy or bread. It is earned and it is the result of an effort by
the people and the government to realize it.
Similarly, there is no need for a referendum for democracy in
dehai. Let us concentrate on developing our Eritrea all of us united
with all our diversities. Our government is saying no to food aid because
it wants our people to produce their own food and the Eritrean people
expect a lot from the educated and not our referendum on democracy. Our
people and the government do not expect to replicate experiences of
other nations overnight nor do they expect manna to fall from heaven,
but they believe that everything can be accomplished under united
effort.I remember reading the response of Ato Yemane Gebreab in an
interview posted in Dehai as to his respect on the Eritrean people
when he said that it is possible for the government to make mistakes but
not the people. Let us respect each other, our government and our people
above all, so that we can move fast to achieve our dreams for a
prosperous Eritrea.
Ghiorgis Tekle.
