EGYPT-ERITREA : ERITREAN PRESIDENT IN EGYPT FOR TALKS ON SUDANESE WAR

CAIRO, March 1 (AFP) - Eritrean President Issayas Afeworki held talks
with his Egyptian counterpart Hosni Mubarak on Saturday centred on the
civil war raging in neighbouring Sudan, officials said.

Afeworki said recently that the summit was made necessary by the
latest developments in east Africa, referring to the offensive
launched in January in the east of Sudan by opposition rebels.

Khartoum has accused the governments of both Ethiopia and Eritrea of
supporting the rebel attacks, allegations denied by both countries.

In an interview published on Saturday by the Egyptian government
newspaper Al Ahram, Afeworki said Sudan's claims "illustrated the
extent of the (Khartoum) regime's hysteria because of its failure and
the heavy losses it has suffered at the hands of the opposition.

The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), which has been fighting
for 13 years to free the mainly animist and Christian south from
domination by the Moslem-dominated north, joined the northern
opposition in a major offensive unleashed January 12 in the south and
east of the country.
