KHARTOUM, March 4 (Reuter) - Iraqi President Saddam Hussein
has sent his justice minister to Sudan to offer support against
what Khartoum says is an Eritrean and Ethiopian invasion,
Khartoum newspapers reported on Tuesday.
They said Shabib al-Maliki arrived on Monday. The
state-owned al-Sudan al-Hadith daily quoted him as saying the
``Iraqi government and its people support Sudan against the
plots being woven against it.''
``Aggressor countries must withdraw their forces from
Sudanese land and refrain from interfering in its internal
affairs,'' he was quoted as saying.
Sudan accuses neighbours Ethiopia and Eritrea of sending
troops to fight alongside rebels seeking to topple Khartoum's
Islamist government. Both countries deny any involvement.
Maliki said his visit was part of ``continuous consultations
between the two countries.'' Sudan supported Iraq in its 1990
invasion of Kuwait and remains one of Baghdad's few friends in
the region.
Sudanese opposition members have said Iraq sent arms to the
Khartoum government to help it fight rebels but state officials
denied this.
