CIRCUMCISION

Selamat my dear sisters Almaz and Samira,

Anyone in his own right mind would never support circumcision.
In discussing this thread, all we're trying to do is share ideas and
knowledge, especially in search of facts and reasons behind FGM. We
shouldn't be apprehensive about discussing - in passing - male circumcision
too and in doing so, we're not trying to belittle FGM or draw a comparison
between the two.

Through discussion, one can reach a certain level of understanding about
the topic in question. In the process questions are raised which open
doors for more exchange of ideas. It was in that light, that male
circumcision was also raised. Of course, it makes sense to discuss the two
separately. FGM is much more alarming and disturbing; it needs to be
addressed in ernest. One should not be disappointed or uneasy if cursory
treatment of a related topic is tabled on Dehai. May be, by doing so,
some Dehaiers, especially the male, would land new knowledge of their
sexuality and the medical problems/benefits of male circumcision.

Almaz, thanks for your report on your research work in Eritrea. As far as
the US legislative act is concerned, perhaps you're right. I thought it was
passed as law; I'll check again.

Unquestionable documented evidence is there which denounces FGM. Some has
already been tabled on Dehai. This discussion would be more concrete if
we try to turn our attention to the validity of reasons behind FGM and
figure out the cultural and religious, if any, issues related to FGM.

Another aspect of the discussion should be to learn of any activities
presently underway in Eritrea to handle the problem and how we can help
in eradicating this problem, which after all, is a monumental undertaking.

Cheers,

Amanuel Melles
